Battery Collection & Recycling Services

Charge up battery recycling with best-in-class recycling solutions that are convenient, compliant and safe. Did you know you can safely recycle your batteries for free by taking them to 14 San Diego County Library branches?

That’s right, the library. It’s not just for books; it’s for batteries too!

Just bring them to the battery drop-off bins located inside the 14 branches. The libraries primarily collect standard alkaline batteries — Cs, Ds, AAs, AAAs, 9-volts, you name it. But they can also take rechargeable batteries; lithium batteries must be bagged separately.

Please tape positive end of batteries to reduce flammability and place batteries in a resealable bag.

Donated Materials Policy

The San Diego County Library is no longer accepting physical donations of materials for the collection, with the exception of items produced by local authors or musicians.

The Library purchases materials at steep discounts that come with labels, barcodes and covers, ready for customer use. It is more expensive to accept a donation and prepare it for circulation than it is for the Library to purchase a title that comes prepared by our vendors. If you would like to support the Library’s collection, we encourage you to donate funds for the purchase of physical and digital materials for our communities.

Have nonperishable food items to donate to help local families in need?

Please limit your donations at these sites to one or two bags of food. Many of our public donation drop off sites are small, local businesses with limited storage capacity and are not equipped to accept large amounts of donations. If you would like to drop off larger quantities of food, please do so at our Miramar or Vista distribution centers.

Also, if you are in need of a donation receipt, we ask that you please drop off your food donations with the Food Bank directly either at the San Diego Food Bank in Miramar or our North County Food Bank chapter in Vista. Our public donation drop-off sites are unable to provide receipts.

The ReStore’s success depends on your donations of new or gently used, re-sellable home improvement items that are sold to the public as-is.  Your donations help future Habitat for Humanity homeowners build and buy their own homes, keep reusable goods out of local landfills, and are tax-deductible.

ReStore accepts most building materials such as doors, windows, carpeting, lumber, hardware, cabinets, plumbing fitting and fixtures, electrical fittings and fixtures, tools, etc. that are in good or excellent condition.

This location also accepts unopened paint that has the original labels and is not rusting or leaking for donation, but can recycle old/used paint (please call 619-516-5267 to inquire).

What is a zero waste grocery store?

A zero-waste grocery store is just a regular grocery store, with one small difference: No single use plastic products are sold! And since every product is sold in bulk, customers can purchase any quantity they’d like.

How does it work? 

It’s simple. Bring your reusable containers, weigh them, fill them, then weigh them again. This way, the weight of your container is deducted and you only pay for what you need.

What if I don’t have my own containers?

No problem! There are reusable containers available for purchase in the store. We also have a community shelf where people have donated jars for anyone to use. 

How does this contribute to sustainability?

By making the switch to reusable glass containers, together we are reducing the amount of single use plastics sent to our landfills and polluting our oceans.

With drop-off bins located near the front of their stores nationwide, it’s now easier than ever for customers to help the environment while shopping at Kohl’s. They accept plastic film packing, shopping bags, bread bags, ziplock bags, and dry-cleaning bags. You can also recycle hangers at Kohl’s. Please drop off your clean and dry items here!

On January 1, 2021, updates to the County of San Diego’s Construction and Demolition (C&D) Debris Recycling Ordinance took effect for projects in the unincorporated areas of San Diego County.

The  C&D Debris Deposit Ordinance requires that the majority of construction, demolition and remodeling projects requiring building, combination and demolition permits divert C&D debris from landfill disposal.

For materials that cannot be repurposed as recycled content into new toys, Mattel PlayBack will either downcycle those materials into other plastic products or convert them from waste to energy.

SB 212 is expected to be fully operational, barring no delays, in 2022. ​

Water that is released to the streets, gutters, and storm drains in San Diego County IS NOT TREATED before it reaches our local creeks, rivers, and the ocean. All sources of pollution, including pool and spa water without cleaning chemicals removed, are prohibited from leaving your property and entering streets or storm drains. Only rain in the storm drain.

Draining a swimming pool, spa or fountain can result in pollutants like algae, chlorine, salt and other chemicals in the water that can be hazardous to San Diego residents and toxic to the environment. Those pollutants and any pool construction materials must be removed before water enters the storm drain system.

Preventing runoff from pool, spa, and fountain maintenance activities from entering our streets and storm drains helps protect our waterways from pollution!  All sources of pollution, including runoff from pools, spas, and fountains, are prohibited from leaving your property; only rainwater is allowed in the streets and storm drains.

What can I do?

• Dispose of waste thoughtfully: discharge chlorinated or treated water into the sanitary sewer system to ensure that the chemicals often used in pools, spas and fountains do not enter our storm drains.

• Use Best Management Practices (BMPs): BMPs are techniques or controls used to prevent or reduce the discharge of pollutants, such as chlorinated water, into the storm drain system. BMPs for pool, spa, and fountain maintenance include discharging water to a landscaped area.

Discharging swimming pool, spa, and fountain water to a storm drain can only be done if the water is dechlorinated, has a pH in the 7.2-8 range, and has no algae or suspended solids.

What Can You Do To Keep Our Waterways Clean?

• Follow manufacturer’s instructions for all pool chemicals. For more information on
  where to properly dispose of excess chemicals, call 1-877-R-1-EARTH (1-877-713-2784).
• Dispose of liquid waste from pool and spa filters into the house sanitary sewer
  system and dispose of solids from pool and spa filters into a trash bag and then rinse
  the filter into a landscaped area or container.
• Drain water to a landscaped or rocky area that will not cause soil erosion or runoff
  to a storm drain.
• Drain water into a storm drain only if the water is reduced to less than 1 part per
  million of chlorine or bromine, and does not contain algaecides, acid wash, or high
  levels of salinity.
• Pool owners are responsible for the practices of their contractors. Share these
  important facts with your pool maintenance company.

We pick up local discarded food and processing residuals and deliver them to our sister company, Frank Konyn Dairy to be used as cattle feed. Last year we picked up over 18,000 tons of the following:

1. Spent brewery grains from 18 local breweries
2. Vegetable and fruit pulp from three local juice manufacturers
3. Discarded bakery products from 12 local bakeries, bread factories, and tortilla shops

We also deliver a variety of high quality mulches, composts, barks and specialty soils to landscapers in San Diego County and throughout Southern California for our other sister company, San Pasqual Valley Soils.

Certified Recyclable Material Collectors (CRMCs) are mid-scale recyclers that have been certified by the City of San Diego to ensure collection vehicles and
containers are properly maintained, and acceptable recyclable materials are collected and reported to the City. According to the City’s Recycling Ordinance, all

We partner with individuals and organizations to work with survivors of sex trafficking and help answer the question of “What happens next?” We are committed to addressing the circumstances that created the vulnerability towards exploitation in the first place – namely, isolation and poverty. The foundation of our answer is to provide a pathway for the women to lift themselves out of poverty through entrepreneurship and relationships; granting them the capacity to earn a sustainable livable wage while they focus on all others areas of healing. Our most successful initiative to date has been equipping the women in our programs to run and operate their own bra-selling businesses using the new and gently used bras we collect from donors around the world as their inventory.

YES, YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY. Maybe you have one or a few bras in your drawer that you don’t wear? We accept new and gently used bras in good condition. Bras and the second-hand clothing market provide a safe and powerful economic opportunity for survivors of trafficking in the developing countries we serve. A woman only has to sell 4 bras a day to earn a livable wage.

After researching the current fashion cycle and the damage that fast fashion has done to our society & environment, Sophie was motivated to explore a niche for circular fashion events, sustainable styling and upcycling.

California State Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383), requires the reduction of organic waste disposed of in landfills. Organic waste is food scraps and food-soiled paper from kitchens and food operations and yard waste such as garden and landscape waste, organic textiles and carpets and wood waste.

In order to comply with SB 1383, and to make San Diego a more sustainable and thriving place for everyone, the City of San Diego is pleased to introduce a new Organic Waste Recycling program for all City residents. The program – which represents the biggest change to trash and recycling in San Diego’s history – supports the City’s Zero Waste and Climate Action Plan goals.

Organic waste collection services for households serviced by the City of San Diego’s Environmental Services Department will begin in January 2023 and will continue as a phased rollout, with completion expected by mid-2023.

Place all sharps in a sharps disposal container immediately after they have been used. This will reduce the risk of needle sticks, cuts, and punctures from sharps.

Never place sharps in the trash, recycling, or green waste container. Never flush sharps down the drain or toilet.

Accepted For Sharps Disposal

Accepted: Sharps such as hypodermic needles, pen needles, intravenous needles, lancets, and other devices that are used to penetrate the skin for the delivery of mediations, contained in U.S. Food and Drug Administration-cleared sharps containers.

Please separate and remove any items that are not accepted before disposing.

Not Accepted: controlled substances (such as opioids), unwanted medicine separate from sharps, batteries, illicit or illegal drugs, and biologics (such as insulin).

Peter Mui, from the Bay Area started this idea of Fixit Clinics because the biggest items that are disposed of right now are electronic devices and textiles that needed a simple repair/mend but it is so much easier to toss and buy than to try to fix. By creating what he likes to describe as do-it-together disassembly at local libraries and/or Makerspaces he brought together the community of trades people to share their skills with their fellow neighbors on how to troubleshoot and repair their appliances, clothes, electronics (the list can be endless) at these hands on clinics. This program has been adopted throughout the country and has received overwhelming support in every community.
