PakTech beverage handles are made of High Density Polyethylene (#2 HDPE), one of the more commonly accepted plastics in curbside recycling programs. Yet though they’re made of a recyclable material they are rarely picked up or read correctly by the sorting systems at Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs).

Customers can return PakTech beverage toppers to the Jumbo’s Brewery takeback bins. The restaurant will then transport the collected PakTechs to one of our collaborative hubs. At this point, PakTechs will be put through a grinder to turn them into a small, usable size for what is to come next.

Pools, Spas, & Fountains – City of San Diego Guidance

Draining a swimming pool, spa or fountain can result in pollutants like algae, chlorine, salt and other chemicals in the water that can be hazardous to San Diego residents and toxic to the environment. Those pollutants and any pool construction materials must be removed before water enters the storm drain system.

Please see Think Blue San Diego’s Pools & Spas Best Practices sheet

Pools & Spas – County Guidance

Preventing runoff from pool, spa, and fountain maintenance activities from entering our streets and storm drains helps protect our waterways from pollution!  All sources of pollution, including runoff from pools, spas, and fountains, are prohibited from leaving your property; only rainwater is allowed in the streets and storm drains.

What can I do?

  • Dispose of waste thoughtfully: discharge chlorinated or treated water into the sanitary sewer system to ensure that the chemicals often used in pools, spas and fountains do not enter our storm drains.
  • Use Best Management Practices (BMPs): BMPs are techniques or controls used to prevent or reduce the discharge of pollutants, such as chlorinated water, into the storm drain system. BMPs for pool, spa, and fountain maintenance include discharging water to a landscaped area.
Know before you go…

Discharging swimming pool, spa, and fountain water to a storm drain can only be done if the water is dechlorinated, has a pH in the 7.2-8 range, and has no algae or suspended solids.

What Can You Do To Keep Our Waterways Clean?

  • Follow manufacturer’s instructions for all pool chemicals. For more information on
where to properly dispose of excess chemicals, call 1-877-R-1-EARTH (1-877-713-2784).
  • Dispose of liquid waste from pool and spa filters into the house sanitary sewer
system and dispose of solids from pool and spa filters into a trash bag and then rinse
the filter into a landscaped area or container.
  • Drain water to a landscaped or rocky area that will not cause soil erosion or runoff
    to a storm drain.
  • Drain water into a storm drain only if the water is reduced to less than 1 part per
million of chlorine or bromine, and does not contain algaecides, acid wash, or high
    levels of salinity.
  • Pool owners are responsible for the practices of their contractors. Share these
important facts with your pool maintenance company.

In addition to the required services from a Franchise Hauler, a business or privately-serviced residence may supplement recycling and/or organic waste recycling service from one of the following optional CRMCs. The City does not assign haulers or set service rates for businesses and privately-serviced residences.

Free The Girls – Used Bra Drop-Off in Fashion Valley Aerie Store

Our Work

We partner with individuals and organizations to work with survivors of sex trafficking and help answer the question of “What happens next?” We are committed to addressing the circumstances that created the vulnerability towards exploitation in the first place – namely, isolation and poverty. The foundation of our answer is to provide a pathway for the women to lift themselves out of poverty through entrepreneurship and relationships; granting them the capacity to earn a sustainable livable wage while they focus on all others areas of healing. Our most successful initiative to date has been equipping the women in our programs to run and operate their own bra-selling businesses using the new and gently used bras we collect from donors around the world as their inventory.

BRAS?

YES, YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY. Maybe you have one or a few bras in your drawer that you don’t wear? We accept new and gently used bras in good condition. Bras and the second-hand clothing market provide a safe and powerful economic opportunity for survivors of trafficking in the developing countries we serve. A woman only has to sell 4 bras a day to earn a livable wage.

City of San Diego Organic Waste Recycling Program

California State Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383), requires the reduction of organic waste disposed of in landfills. Organic waste is food scraps and food-soiled paper from kitchens and food operations and yard waste such as garden and landscape waste, organic textiles and carpets and wood waste.

In order to comply with SB 1383, and to make San Diego a more sustainable and thriving place for everyone, the City of San Diego is pleased to introduce a new Organic Waste Recycling program for all City residents. The program – which represents the biggest change to trash and recycling in San Diego’s history – supports the City’s Zero Waste and Climate Action Plan goals.

Organic waste collection services for households serviced by the City of San Diego’s Environmental Services Department will begin in January 2023 and will continue as a phased rollout, with completion expected by mid-2023.

For information about when you can start participating in organic waste recycling, what items can go in the new green bin, and other vital details, please refer to the Organic Waste Recycling Frequently Asked Questions page or the city’s new Organic Waste Recycling website.

City of San Diego Commericial Business Organic Waste Recycling

  • California  Senate Bill 1383 requires all commercial businesses to recycle organic waste effective Jan.1,2022.
  • Organic waste is food scraps, food-soiled paper, landscaping waste and non-hazardous wood.
  • When organic waste decomposes in a landfill, it releases methane, a gas that traps the sun’s heat and contributes to climate change.
  • Landscape service providers or private waste haulers may collect landscaping and non-hazardous wood waste.
  • Only franchise waste haulers or certified recyclers may collect food scraps and food-soiled paper.

Amerigas – Propane tank recycling

Propane Tank Disposal Made Easy

When you are ready to get rid of an unwanted or expired propane tank, it’s important that you do it the right way to keep everyone safe. Propane tanks can’t be thrown away in your regular trash pickup, but we’re here to make disposal easy. Exchanging your old propane tank for a refilled one is the easiest way to dispose of it, but if you need to get rid of it for good- you can also just drop it off at most propane refill or exchange locations.

Blue Rhino – Propane tank recycling

Recycle Your Propane Tank

Since there’s a possibility of propane left in the tank, many landfills, recycling centers, and scrap metal dealers will not accept unwanted tanks for recycling. However, some propane exchange companies, including Blue Rhino, will happily take your unused propane cylinders and recycle them at no cost to you. If you have a propane tank that you don’t want, place your old tank beside a Blue Rhino display and we’ll take care of the rest.

Recycling

Since 2010, we have offered front-of-store recycling kiosks that give guests an easy way to recycle cans, glass, plastic bottles, plastic bags, MP3 players, ink cartridges and cell phones right in their local store. The goal of the program is to extend our company recycling efforts, and so far, the program has kept thousands of tons of recycled materials out of landfills.

We endeavor to make recycling simpler and more convenient for our guests with select take-back programs. We have offered front-of-store recycling of plastic bags and some electronics since 2010 and have held car seat trade-in events since 2016.
