Becoming a better recycler means understanding what is recyclable and what isn’t in your community. No matter where you live, some items, like yard waste, should never be recycled. Learn how to sustainably manage your yard waste.

There are many ways to become a better recycler. Understanding what is recyclable and what isn’t in your community is the number one way to be a better, more effective recycler. But no matter where you live, some items should NEVER be recycled – for example, yard waste.
While there are a few sustainable ways to manage your yard waste, which include grass clippings and trimmings from trees, flowers, shrubs, and more, recycling that material isn’t one of them.
If you’re looking to implement more sustainable habits into your yard or lawn maintenance routine, then check out these tips from Republic Services:
Taking pride in your yard or garden doesn’t mean taking up space in a landfill with yard waste. Dispose of your yard waste the correct way and then sit back and admire the beautiful – and sustainable – outdoor space you’ve created!
Recycling your used tires is terrific for the environment. Potential uses include: polymer treatment, crumb rubber
production, retreading, shredding, and the manufacture of such products as rubber asphalt, playground equipment,
crash barriers, erosion control, floor and track surfacing, oil spill recovery, roofing, and other environmentally safe
applications.
Fees apply: $6 per tier
Solar panels accepted for $20 per panel on the 3rd Saturday, 6am – 12pm, of every month!
Going green is made easier and more affordable for organizations, thanks to Free Recycling Quotes. This online recycling exchange offers up to five quotes from local and national recycling centers, absolutely free. Interested parties need only fill out an online form requesting to recycle certain items, such as electronics, metals, paper or plastic, which is then forwarded to the website Free Recycling Quotes ensures that clients receive quotes that are not generic marketing rates, but are customized to suit their requests. Register for an upcoming, free Fix-It Clinic here.
Peter Mui, from the Bay Area started this idea of Fixit Clinics because the biggest items that are disposed of right now are electronic devices and textiles that needed a simple repair/mend but it is so much easier to toss and buy than to try to fix. By creating what he likes to describe as do-it-together disassembly at local libraries and/or Makerspaces he brought together the community of trades people to share their skills with their fellow neighbors on how to troubleshoot and repair their appliances, clothes, electronics (the list can be endless) at these hands on clinics. This program has been adopted throughout the country and has received overwhelming support in every community.
For more information about Peter Mui’s Fixit Clinics go to http://fixitclinic.blogspot.com/
If you have any old tools you don’t need, please bring them to the next SD Fixit Clinic and/or email us at sdfixitclinic@gmail.com to arrange drop-off locations.

When you are ready to get rid of an unwanted or expired propane tank, it’s important that you do it the right way to keep everyone safe. Propane tanks can’t be thrown away in your regular trash pickup, but we’re here to make disposal easy. Exchanging your old propane tank for a refilled one is the easiest way to dispose of it, but if you need to get rid of it for good- you can also just drop it off at most propane refill or exchange locations.
Need your clothes repaired or altered? Casa De Oro Tailoring in Spring Valley can help you. Call for more info.
Since there’s a possibility of propane left in the tank, many landfills, recycling centers, and scrap metal dealers will not accept unwanted tanks for recycling. However, some propane exchange companies, including Blue Rhino, will happily take your unused propane cylinders and recycle them at no cost to you. If you have a propane tank that you don’t want, place your old tank beside a Blue Rhino display and we’ll take care of the rest.
Need your clothing repaired or altered? Mai Buton Sewing and Alterations in Imperial Beach can help you. Give them a call for more info!

Restrictions: Limit: 20 gallons per visit. Call ahead for hours and to make sure the store can accept the amount and type of paint you would like to recycle.
For Households:
Please review the detailed list of PaintCare products and non-PaintCare products.
This site accepts latex and oil-based house paint, stains and varnish in containers up to 5 gallons in size. This site does not accept aerosols (spray paint or other spray products), containers without original labels, or containers that are leaking or empty.
To be accepted for drop-off, PaintCare products must be in their original containers of no larger than 5 gallons in size, must have the original manufacturer’s printed label on the container, and must be covered with a secured lid. They cannot accept open or leaking cans.
To use the PaintCare program for oil-based paint, a business must qualify as an exempt generator under federal and any analogous state hazardous waste generator rules. Please visit our Very Small Quantity Generator page for more information on exempt generator rules. If your business does not qualify as an exempt generator, it will not be able to use the program for oil-based paint, but it can still use the program for latex products.
For more information, you can check out the Recycle with PaintCare Brochure.
That’s right, the library. It’s not just for books; it’s for batteries too!
Just bring them to the battery drop-off bins located inside the 14 branches. The libraries primarily collect standard alkaline batteries — Cs, Ds, AAs, AAAs, 9-volts, you name it. But they can also take rechargeable batteries; lithium batteries must be bagged separately.
Please tape positive end of batteries to reduce flammability and place batteries in a resealable bag.
The San Diego County Library is no longer accepting physical donations of materials for the collection, with the exception of items produced by local authors or musicians.
The Library purchases materials at steep discounts that come with labels, barcodes and covers, ready for customer use. It is more expensive to accept a donation and prepare it for circulation than it is for the Library to purchase a title that comes prepared by our vendors. If you would like to support the Library’s collection, we encourage you to donate funds for the purchase of physical and digital materials for our communities.
If you are looking for an organization to donate your books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, or magazines to, consider contacting one of the organizations below:
Your Branch Friends of the Library
Many branch Friends of the Library groups accept book donations for their book sales. Please check their websites or phone ahead to ensure that your donation can be accepted at this time. Items donated to the Friends of the Library are sold to support San Diego County Library branch collections and events.
