Free Mulch & Compost Giveaway – City of Vista Residents

This is a self-serve, self-load, and self-haul event. Residents must use their own containers, gloves, and shovels. If you are hauling mulch in an open truck bed, please bring a tarp. Commercial vehicles are not permitted.

Mulch application helps control weeds, is a great tool to help save water ( 2-3 inches of mulch retain soil moisture), prevent erosion, and moderate soil temperature.

Use of compost Improves plant growth and health, provides plant nutrients in a stable organic form, reduces erosion, and also helps conserve water by retaining soil moisture.

Goodwill provides free donation pickup services for large furniture and large quantities of items (corporate donations, pallets, 50+ boxes, etc.). Pickups are not available on demand, and may result in up to a one month wait time. Lowe’s – Vista

Recycling stations at all participating Lowe’s

The permanent recycling bins are located inside the store entrance.  Lowe’s offers a free, convenient and easy way for customers to recycle rechargeable batteries, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and plastic shopping bags.

Customers can now drop off plastic plant trays, pots and tags for recycling at any Lowe’s Garden Center in the continental United States.

With the purchase of a new appliance, Lowe’s will haul away and recycle customers’ old appliances.

Home Depot provides a free CFL recycling program at its stores. Residents can drop off their intact CFL and LED bulbs plus Christmas string lights at collection bins located near the service desk or by the front door.  Put bulbs in bags before disposing into bins.

Shattered bulbs or florescent tubes cannot be accepted, find a local household hazardous waste collection facility by calling 1-800-237-BLUE (2583)

Home Depot also accepts rechargeable batteries used in power tools for recycling as well as household batteries.  Tape the ends of each battery before putting into the bin at the service desk.

Sherwin Williams – Vista (PaintCare Program)

This location will accept latex or oil-based architectural paint or “program products” which are defined as interior or exterior architectural coatings such as stains and varnishes, sold in containers of 5 gallons or less.

Batteries Plus Bulbs – Vista

Batteries Plus Bulbs will recycle spent light bulbs, ballasts, and used Alkaline batteries (D, A, AAA, etc.). Old-school incandescent bulbs are safe to dispose of in trash.  LED and CFL (the curly ones)  bulbs need to be properly recycled and are accepted here for $1 per bulb.  Average price to dispose of fluorescent light tube is about $1 per foot per each tube.*

Special instructions: -Fluorescent light tubes and bulbs contain mercury; special handling is required if the bulbs or tubes are broken.
