Solana Center for Environmental Innovation (Food Cycle Program)
Solana Center offers Food Cycle, a composting program for local homes and businesses. Instead of throwing food waste away, customers can drop-off their food waste at Solana Center’s facility and have it processed into organic soil. Participating customers may also return once the compost is processed to take home free organic soil great for gardening.
The Food Cycle processing center also acts as a demonstration project for hyper-local food waste diversion. The service is kept low-cost thanks to generous donations from our sponsors.
Help us close the loop between organic waste and healthy soil in San Diego; enroll in our Food Cycle Program today!
Check out our FAQ page or contact foodcycle@solanacenter.org if you have additional questions.
How does it work?
It’s easy! Food Cycle members can add all types of food waste because we use the bokashi method of composting, which increases the types of acceptable waste. Bokashi pre-processing allows participants to dispose of all organic material (including proteins) and to retain until the bucket is full. This pre-composting step allows stockpiling for fewer drop-offs by participants and reduces potential odors and vectors. Find out more about bokashi here.
-
Become a member: Residents can join the Food Cycle program with a $52 start-up package which includes a 5-gallon bucket, bokashi bran, and an option between two monthly membership fees:
-
- Basic Membership is $15/month, covering 1 full bucket drop-off each visit
- Expanded Membership is $25/month, covering 2 full buckets each visit
- Signing up for your business? Contact Solana Center directly for business-specific details and pricing.
-
-
Set up your system: Bring home your food collection 5-gallon bucket and bokashi bran. We’ll walk you through how it all works when you sign up, but here are some tips!
-
Divert your food scraps: Collect all food waste at home or in the office into the 5-gallon bucket. Sprinkle bokashi bran on top of every 2-3 inches of food waste and keep the lid sealed to reduce odors. Repeat until the bucket is full.
-
Swap out at Solana Center: Once the bucket is full, bring it back to Solana Center for processing and collect a new clean bucket.

3 Amigos Recycling
Almost every bottle and can you use can be recycled. Look at the label for the universal recycle symbol and the words CA CASH REFUND or CA CRV.* Containers with these markings are good to go in your curbside bin and will be accepted at the recycling center. For more information about the CRV program, check out our Frequently Asked Questions. Other acceptable labels include “California Redemption Value,” “CA Redemption Value” or “California Cash Refund.”
There’s no need to wash or crush your recyclables. Just separate your aluminum, glass, and plastic containers in different bags or bins, and head for the recycling center.
Recycling centers are not owned or operated by the State of California. All recycling center days and hours of operation are determined and overseen by the individual recycling center operator and must be posted at the center. Centers are required to be open a minimum of 30 hours per week, at least five days a week, and at least one weekend day. If you would like to report a recycling center closure or file a formal complaint regarding a certified recycling center, please email CalRecycle or call 1-800-RECYCLE.

Vista Pallets & Recycling
Will buy back broken pallets. Pick up available for quantities of 150 or more.
EcoVida Pallets Recycling
EcoVida Waste wants to buy and recycle your pallets and cardboard. If you generate a large amount of pallets or cardboard, then pallet recycling and cardboard recycling has real value. Our promise to you is simple, if we buy these commodities from your company, they will be reused or recycled 100% of the time. We have tremendous buying power with commodities in today’s market and can get you the right value and quick payment for a one time purchase or ongoing scheduled pick up service.
Pallet Recycling
Currently over 60% of the US pallet industry comes from new solid wood utilized to make pallets. That means only 40% of pallets used in the past year were recovered from used pallets for reuse and recycling. Even pallets that are broken can at least be recycled. With EcoVida Waste, we will find a home for your pallet inventory that will allow you to free up valuable space on site, get paid for these pallets that otherwise would cost you to dispose of, and you recycle them either into new pallets or into a compost mix. Call us today to find out how we can “pay you per pallet” and put money back into your budget.
Cardboard Recycling
Most businesses generate a fair amount of cardboard and others generate a lot. If you are generating enough cardboard to bale it, then we can buy it direct from you. Cardboard has nice value to it but so much of the value gets lost in transportation fees. The best way to avoid this is to bale the cardboard and let us set you up on a route to have them picked up as frequently as you need. This will allow you to maximize a rebate for this commodity.

What to do when I need help with wildlife?
We will respond when a wild creature is posing an immediate threat to humans or other animals.
We will respond if the animal is sick or injured, too young to survive on its own or trapped. We do not respond to reports of wildlife being loose or simply roaming.
We will respond if the wild animal is a rabies vector (raccoons, skunks, bats, foxes or coyotes, for example) AND has attacked you or your pet.
We cannot help you with wildlife nuisance problems like skunks under your porch or opossums raiding your pet’s food.
