Safe Disposal Information

Place all sharps in a sharps disposal container immediately after they have been used. This will reduce the risk of needle sticks, cuts, and punctures from sharps.

Never place sharps in the trash, recycling, or green waste container. Never flush sharps down the drain or toilet.

Accepted For Sharps Disposal

Accepted: Sharps such as hypodermic needles, pen needles, intravenous needles, lancets, and other devices that are used to penetrate the skin for the delivery of mediations, contained in U.S. Food and Drug Administration-cleared sharps containers.

Please separate and remove any items that are not accepted before disposing.

Not Accepted: controlled substances (such as opioids), unwanted medicine separate from sharps, batteries, illicit or illegal drugs, and biologics (such as insulin).

To assist patients with managing and disposing of used sharps, many pharmaceutical companies offer mail-back programs, which are often free of charge. Other companies provide FDA-cleared containers to patients who use medications that require sharps.

Peter Mui, from the Bay Area started this idea of Fixit Clinics because the biggest items that are disposed of right now are electronic devices and textiles that needed a simple repair/mend but it is so much easier to toss and buy than to try to fix. By creating what he likes to describe as do-it-together disassembly at local libraries and/or Makerspaces he brought together the community of trades people to share their skills with their fellow neighbors on how to troubleshoot and repair their appliances, clothes, electronics (the list can be endless) at these hands on clinics. This program has been adopted throughout the country and has received overwhelming support in every community.

Plastic Beach Retail Recycling

CalRecycle’s website notifies Californians of local retailers who are obligated to offer CRV redemption in-store when there is no buyback center nearby.

Beverage dealers, retailers that sell CRV beverages, share an obligation to ensure convenient redemption opportunities for consumers.  If a beverage dealer is located in an “unserved Convenience zone” and there is no recycling center nearby, these retailers are required to either redeem CRV material in-store (Option A), or opt to pay a fee of $100 per day (Option B).

We accept e-waste from residents and companies. Sorry, we don’t pick up e-Waste from residents, but residents are welcomed to drop of their e-Waste at our facility. Please note that some things are free to drop off while other electronics or small household appliances may have a small disposal fee. We don’t take large appliances. Call to get answers. If you are a company you can drop off your e-Waste at our facility or perhaps call us for a pick up. But please note that we do require a certain truck load volume. We cannot pick up a few items only- it has to be a truck load. For your information: monitors, T.V.s, computers, desktops, tower cases, laptops, and all kinds of wire or cables are free to drop off. This location will accept architectural paint or “program products” which are defined as interior or exterior architectural coatings sold in containers of 5 gallons or less.

This location will accept paint under the following conditions:

  • Paint must be in its original container
  • Container must be labeled
  • Container must be in good condition and not leaking
  • Container must be five gallons in size or smaller.

Drop-off sites may establish limits on the quantity of products they accept. Generally, the limit in small stores will be lower than in large store. Please check with the site if you have more than 5 gallons.

In addition to residents, this program is available to trade painters, contractors and other businesses with one restriction: If your business produces more than 27 gallons of hazardous waste per month, you may only use the drop-off sites for your latex paint and not for your oil-based paint. To participate in the collection program, donors can bring clean and dry soft plastics to any of our participating retail locations. The soft plastics we accept include the following: plastic film, single use grocery/retail bags, cling wrap, bubble wrap, air pillows used for shipping, newspaper sleeves, case overwrap (like for water or soda), and other product wrap.

If the package is shiny or makes a crinkly/crunchy sound in your hand, it should not be included. If you’re unsure if your plastic can be donated, see if the package will stretch when you pull it. If yes, it can be included. If it tears like paper, please leave it behind.

Since 2010, Target’s recycling kiosks have given guests an easy way to recycle cans, glass, plastic bottles, plastic bags, MP3 players, ink cartridges and cell phones right in their local store. The goal of the program is to extend Target’s company recycling efforts, and so far, the program has kept thousands of tons of recycled materials out of landfills.

They also host twice-annual car seat trade-in events during which guests can bring in expired car seats and receive a coupon in return. Learn more about current and upcoming program details.

What can be dropped off? Any kind of clothing, in any condition, from any brand. But there are two rules: the clothes must be clean and they must be dry.

CLOTHING: Virtually all types of clean, gently-used clothing and shoes, including women’s, men’s, kid’s, children’s, baby’s dresses, shirts, pants, skirts, shorts, sandals, tennis shoes, sneakers, heels, flats, boots and more.

JEWELRY: Virtually all types of jewelry, including rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.

ACCESSORIES: Virtually all types of accessories, including purses, bags, belts, ties and wallets.

HOUSEHOLD: Small appliances in working condition (microwaves, blenders, toasters, coffee makers, etc), dishes, glasses, silverware, bedding, linens, pillows, rugs, comforters, home decor, baby items (see restrictions below), art work and frames.

Since 2010, our recycling kiosks have given guests an easy way to recycle cans, glass, plastic bottles, plastic bags, MP3 players, ink cartridges and cell phones right in their local store. The goal of the program is to extend our company recycling efforts, and so far, the program has kept thousands of tons of recycled materials out of landfills.

Customers pay for products at the landfill entrance and pick up materials at the Miramar Greenery after showing their receipt. Those who hand-load mulch or compost need to provide their own tools such as a shovel, container and tarp. Those who paid for compost, wood chips or mulch will have their vehicle loaded by one of the Greenery equipment operators. All vehicles must have their loads covered. It is advised to bring and wear a dust mask while loading and spreading the material.

Goodwill Soft Plastics Program

Goodwill San Diego aims to address the environmental challenge posed by soft plastics, such as plastic films, shopping bags, and bubble wrap which are not accepted in curbside recycling programs. These materials often end up in landfills where they contribute to pollution, contaminate our waterways, and pose a risk to local wildlife. By establishing a collection program, Goodwill wants to divert these plastics, reduce environmental impact, and promote a more sustainable community.

Once collected at our facilities, soft plastics are sent to our partner who transforms them into a variety of valuable products. These include durable pallets, stylish patio furniture, and deck flooring. This process keeps soft plastics in the use cycle, reducing the need for new material by using products that would have become waste.

To participate in the collection program, donors can bring clean and dry soft plastics to any of our participating retail locations. The soft plastics we accept include the following: plastic film, single use grocery/retail bags, cling wrap, bubble wrap, air pillows used for shipping, newspaper sleeves, case overwrap (like for water or soda), and other product wrap. If the package is shiny or makes a crinkly/crunchy sound in your hand, it should not be included. If you’re unsure if your plastic can be donated, see if the package will stretch when you pull it. If yes, it can be included. If it tears like paper, please leave it behind.

Following these steps ensures that your donated soft plastics can be effectively recycled into new products and supports a cleaner, healthier environment.
