ORGANIC WASTE

Food scraps

Organic waste is a renewable natural resource, and it mainly comes from yard and kitchen waste from homes, food waste, and industrial and commercial operations scraps. Mandatory recycling of organic waste is the next step to achieving California’s Zero Waste goals.

Recycling organics is easy and convenient with EDCO’s commingled Organics Recycling program. EDCO has expanded its source-separated green waste collection to include recycling food waste. The service will allow customers to place food scraps in the same container as green waste. EDCO’s new Organics Recycling program is a foundation for your community to achieve State mandates, including AB 1826, AB 1594, and SB 1383, which are directly related to organics recycling in the State of California.

Medical Waste Pros

Mailback Pharmaceutical Waste Disposal

Mailback services are great solutions for pharmaceutical waste in households and healthcare facilities alike. These services allow you to securely dispose of your medications, ensuring your prescriptions don’t cause harm to others or the environment.

With mailback services, all you have to do is properly package and label your waste before shipping. You have control over how often you dispose of your waste rather than waiting for DEA take-back events. The medications will be sent to a disposal company who can treat them before disposal.

Get Free, No-Obligation Quotes on Pharmaceutical Waste Disposal Today

Medical Waste Pros can connect you with a contractor who can help you develop a program that keeps your prescriptions out of the wrong hands. We can even find contractors who provide a number of different services for a variety of needs right in your area.

Prescriptions that are not safely disposed of can cause harm to individuals who may accidentally or intentionally consume them, and can release toxic chemicals into the environment if they make it to the landfill. Medical Waste Pros offers safe pharmaceutical waste disposal services for your convenience so your medications are never at risk of being dangerous to individuals or the environment.

Cardiff by the Sea Library

Did you know you can safely recycle your batteries for free by taking them to 14 San Diego County Library branches?

That’s right, the library. It’s not just for books; it’s for batteries too!

Just bring them to the battery drop-off bins located inside the 14 branches. The libraries primarily collect standard alkaline batteries — Cs, Ds, AAs, AAAs, 9-volts, you name it. But they can also take rechargeable batteries; lithium batteries must be bagged separately.

Please tape positive end of batteries to reduce flammability and place batteries in a resealable bag.

Donated Materials Policy

The San Diego County Library is no longer accepting physical donations of materials for the collection, with the exception of items produced by local authors or musicians.

The Library purchases materials at steep discounts that come with labels, barcodes and covers, ready for customer use. It is more expensive to accept a donation and prepare it for circulation than it is for the Library to purchase a title that comes prepared by our vendors. If you would like to support the Library’s collection, we encourage you to donate funds for the purchase of physical and digital materials for our communities.

If you are looking for an organization to donate your books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, or magazines to, consider contacting one of the organizations below:

Your Branch Friends of the Library
Many branch Friends of the Library groups accept book donations for their book sales. Please check their websites or phone ahead to ensure that your donation can be accepted at this time. Items donated to the Friends of the Library are sold to support San Diego County Library branch collections and events.

Gillette® Razor Recycling Program – FREE Mailback or Dropoff

Recycle all brands of blades and razors through this program.

Program accepted waste: All brands of blades and razors (systems and disposable units, and replaceable-blade cartridge units), rigid plastic packaging, and flexible plastic bag packaging.

Click here for info on joining this mailback program or to find local drop off sites.

Best practices for recycling

If you choose to rinse your product, please note that it must be completely dry prior to shipping. You cannot ship dripping packages.

What happens to the waste

Once collected, the waste is broken down and separated by material. Plastics are cleaned and pelletized to be recycled into new products, such as picnic tables and park benches. Metal materials are sent for smelting and conversion to new alloys. Click here to learn more about TerraCycle’s recycling process.

Become a local recycling solution

Sign up to become a public drop-off point for the Gillette Razor Recycling Program and help us build our national recycling network! Businesses, colleges, cities, and community organizations can sign up here to become a local recycling solution.
