We endeavor to make recycling simpler and more convenient for our guests with select take-back programs. We have offered front-of-store recycling of plastic bags and some electronics since 2010 and have held car seat trade-in events since 2016.

Free The Girls – Used Bra Drop-Off in Fashion Valley Aerie Store

Our Work

We partner with individuals and organizations to work with survivors of sex trafficking and help answer the question of “What happens next?” We are committed to addressing the circumstances that created the vulnerability towards exploitation in the first place – namely, isolation and poverty. The foundation of our answer is to provide a pathway for the women to lift themselves out of poverty through entrepreneurship and relationships; granting them the capacity to earn a sustainable livable wage while they focus on all others areas of healing. Our most successful initiative to date has been equipping the women in our programs to run and operate their own bra-selling businesses using the new and gently used bras we collect from donors around the world as their inventory.

BRAS?

YES, YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY. Maybe you have one or a few bras in your drawer that you don’t wear? We accept new and gently used bras in good condition. Bras and the second-hand clothing market provide a safe and powerful economic opportunity for survivors of trafficking in the developing countries we serve. A woman only has to sell 4 bras a day to earn a livable wage.

selling/trading in your books to Verbatim Books

Verbatim Books buys and trades books!

Verbatim Books is very selective about the books they take, but they do buy all types of books (except for school textbooks). For a better idea of what they buy, please feel free to browse around the store and see the books they are selling.

Unfortunately they cannot say if they will be able to buy books without seeing them in person. They pay about 20% in cash/30% in store credit of their retail value.

They buy/trade on Fridays and also on Mondays from 12-4 pm and also by appointment if those times can’t work for you.

If you have more than 5 boxes of books, please make an appointment.

To make an appointment, send an email to selling AT verbatimbooks.com (please replace the AT with an @ symbol) with a picture of the books or at least a cross-section of them to give them an idea of what you have. Without pictures, they will likely not be able to make an appointment. They have appointments available Saturday and Sunday for your convenience.

Please note that they do not make house calls or take donations.

San Diego County Waste Ordinance Update June 2021

The County of San Diego Board of Supervisors unanimously approved updates to the Solid Waste Ordinance on May 5, 2021. This requires all residents and businesses in the densely-populated, and to a lesser extent sparsely-populated, areas of the unincorporated County to comply with new recycling requirements. Densely-populated areas include census tracts that have a population density of more than 75 people per square mile. Click the website link to see how the new ordinance impacts you.

Single-Family Homes & Multi-Family Complexes with 4 or less units

Residents may demonstrate compliance by:

  • Subscribing to a 3-stream collection service with a non-exclusive franchise hauler, or contract with a Certified Recyclable Materials Collector for certain materials.
  • Self-hauling all designated materials. Registration with the County is required and Self-Haulers will be required to maintain receipts or a log of self-hauling activities for 3 years and submit them periodically or upon request to County staff. Contact Recycle@sdcounty.ca.gov for information.

Waiver from Service Requirements

Single family residences in the densely-populated areas, including multi-family premises with 4 or less units, who manage all organic materials generated on-site may apply for a waiver from organic recycling service requirements. Learn more here.

Businesses & Multi-Family Complexes with 5+ units

How do I Comply?

Generators may demonstrate compliance by:

  • Subscribing to a 3-stream collection service with a non-exclusive franchise hauler, or contract with a Certified Recyclable Materials Collector for certain materials.
  • Self-hauling materials. Registration with the County is required and Self-Haulers will be required to maintain receipts or a log of self-hauling activities for 3 years and submit them periodically or upon request to County staff. Contact Recycle@sdcounty.ca.gov for information.
  • Maintaining records:
    • Tenant or employee education
    • Landscaping contracts (if applicable)
    • Edible food donation contracts and records (if applicable)

Waivers from Service Requirements

Commercial and multi-family properties (5+ units) may apply for waivers from recycling and/or organics service requirements when de minimis generation occurs, if there are physical space constraints, and/or if all organic materials generated are managed on-site. Learn more about waivers here.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Why do I have to pay for a recycling bin from my waste hauler? Waste services are provided by a series of franchise haulers who set their own rates as private companies. As such, when additional services are added, residents will have to pay their haulers for the additional service(s).
  • What is right sizing? Right sizing is the process of adjusting your waste collection services to match the amount and type of waste your property produces. The County recommends right sizing services to make them more affordable (such as decreasing the size of your landfill bin once you receive recycling or organics services). In general, using cart services only instead of a dumpster service should result in a cheaper waste bill.
  • How do I recycle food scraps? Visit How to Recycle Organic Waste for guidelines and tips.
  • How do I get a kitchen caddie/compost bin for collecting food scraps? Ask your hauler if they are offering free kitchen caddies, or they can be purchased from many home goods, home improvement, and online shops.

For specifics on the solid waste ordinance please view the following web pages, depending on your area*:

*Based on census tract data, densely-populated areas include larger communities such as Spring Valley, Lakeside, Ramona, Fallbrook, etc., while sparsely-populated areas include smaller communities such as Campo, Boulevard, Warner Springs, Ranchita, etc. Verify which type of area you live in here.

Post-Storm Sandbag Guidance

With rainy season approaching, residents may want to consider keeping their sandbags (filled or empty) for reuse.  Generally, clean and dry sandbags can be stored out of the sunlight in a covered, above-ground location.

If used sandbags are uncontaminated, you can empty the sand and then save, repurpose or dispose of the empty bags.

If you see or suspect that your sandbags are contaminated (e.g., in contact with raw sewage, industrial chemicals, petroleum products, etc.), handle them with protective gear, including gloves and protective eyewear.  Dispose of them at select landfills or through a hazardous waste contractor (as appropriate).  As additional handling and paperwork will be required, please contact the landfill facility or operator in advance for more information

Do not place bags in recycle bin.   Empty bags can be placed in trash cans if you choose not to reuse them.  You may also take them directly to a landfill.  Local landfills (Miramar, Sycamore, Otay, and Borrego Springs) can accept sandbags used for stormwater control during the recent storm.

Full sandbags should not be placed in carts or dumpsters for pick-up (due to their weight).  The sand can be raked into soil or added to planters or flowerbeds as a soil amendment instead.

For questions not covered here, unincorporated county residents can contact 1-877-R-1-EARTH or 1-877-713-2784.

Residents of cities or tribal lands should also check with their jurisdictions for any additional guidance.
