Solana Center for Environmental Innovation (Food Cycle Program)
Solana Center offers Food Cycle, a composting program for local homes and businesses. Instead of throwing food waste away, customers can drop-off their food waste at Solana Center’s facility and have it processed into organic soil. Participating customers may also return once the compost is processed to take home free organic soil great for gardening.
The Food Cycle processing center also acts as a demonstration project for hyper-local food waste diversion. The service is kept low-cost thanks to generous donations from our sponsors.
Help us close the loop between organic waste and healthy soil in San Diego; enroll in our Food Cycle Program today!
Check out our FAQ page or contact foodcycle@solanacenter.org if you have additional questions.
How does it work?
It’s easy! Food Cycle members can add all types of food waste because we use the bokashi method of composting, which increases the types of acceptable waste. Bokashi pre-processing allows participants to dispose of all organic material (including proteins) and to retain until the bucket is full. This pre-composting step allows stockpiling for fewer drop-offs by participants and reduces potential odors and vectors. Find out more about bokashi here.
-
Become a member: Residents can join the Food Cycle program with a $52 start-up package which includes a 5-gallon bucket, bokashi bran, and an option between two monthly membership fees:
-
- Basic Membership is $15/month, covering 1 full bucket drop-off each visit
- Expanded Membership is $25/month, covering 2 full buckets each visit
- Signing up for your business? Contact Solana Center directly for business-specific details and pricing.
-
-
Set up your system: Bring home your food collection 5-gallon bucket and bokashi bran. We’ll walk you through how it all works when you sign up, but here are some tips!
-
Divert your food scraps: Collect all food waste at home or in the office into the 5-gallon bucket. Sprinkle bokashi bran on top of every 2-3 inches of food waste and keep the lid sealed to reduce odors. Repeat until the bucket is full.
-
Swap out at Solana Center: Once the bucket is full, bring it back to Solana Center for processing and collect a new clean bucket.

3 Amigos Recycling
Almost every bottle and can you use can be recycled. Look at the label for the universal recycle symbol and the words CA CASH REFUND or CA CRV.* Containers with these markings are good to go in your curbside bin and will be accepted at the recycling center. For more information about the CRV program, check out our Frequently Asked Questions. Other acceptable labels include “California Redemption Value,” “CA Redemption Value” or “California Cash Refund.”
There’s no need to wash or crush your recyclables. Just separate your aluminum, glass, and plastic containers in different bags or bins, and head for the recycling center.
Recycling centers are not owned or operated by the State of California. All recycling center days and hours of operation are determined and overseen by the individual recycling center operator and must be posted at the center. Centers are required to be open a minimum of 30 hours per week, at least five days a week, and at least one weekend day. If you would like to report a recycling center closure or file a formal complaint regarding a certified recycling center, please email CalRecycle or call 1-800-RECYCLE.

Report Dead Birds – Vector Control Program
The Vector Control Program collects and tests certain kinds of dead birds for the presence of West Nile virus, which can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. These birds are susceptible to West Nile virus and are good indicators that the disease may be present in the community. Residents are encouraged to report dead birds to Vector Control for testing. Disease surveillance and early detection of vector-borne disease helps to protect public health and make neighborhoods healthy places to live, work and play.
Types of Dead Birds Collected by Vector Control:
Crows
Ravens
Jays
Hawks
Owls
Falcons
If you find a dead bird of the type listed above during business hours (Monday thru Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm), please notify our office at (858) 694-2888. On weekends, holidays or outside of business hours, please call us at (858) 505-6657. You may also email us at vector@sdcounty.ca.gov (Mon-Fri only, please do not email on weekends or holidays).
Criteria for Collecting Dead Birds for Testing
The bird must be dead for less than 24 hours. If you are not sure if the bird you have found is less than 24 hours old, look for the following clues:
1. The bird should not be stiff.
2. There should be no ants or flies covering the bird.
3. The bird should not have a foul odor.
4. The bird should be intact.
a. No missing body parts.
b. No physical injuries.
c. Eyeballs must be intact (disease testing requires bird eye fluid).
DO NOT FREEZE THE BIRD.
Safe Handling of Dead Birds
Use caution if you must handle a dead bird:
Do not touch dead birds with your bare hands.
Wear gloves or use a shovel to pick the bird up.
Wear protective eyewear to prevent bird fluids from being splashed into your eyes when the bird is wet, large or covered with feces.
Do not eat or smoke while handling the bird.
Double bag the dead bird by placing it into one plastic bag and then placing that bag into another plastic bag.
Wash your hands with soap and warm water IMMEDIATELY after handling the bird.
