No-Cost Chipping Program – Fire Safe Council of San Diego County

Maintaining the legally required 100 feet of defensible space around your property can be a challenge for homeowners. Once you’ve taken the necessary steps to protect your property by thinning and trimming hazardous brush, you are often left with large piles of dry vegetation, which can themselves become a fire hazard.

That is why we created our Community Chipping Program for residents living in high fire risk properties in San Diego County. Once you’ve done the hard work of preparing the space, our contractors come out and chip the cleared vegetation for you, free of charge. The chips are left with you and can be used as a weed suppressing mulch on your property.

How to participate in the Community Chipping Program:

  • Participate in our Home Assessment Program and let staff know that you are interested in participating in a Community Chipping Day.
  • Create your defensible space and stage vegetation within 5 feet of your curbside or driveway, needs to be extremely visible, ideally from the main road or driveway.
  • Our contractor will give you a call to let you know what day they will be coming by.
  • Receive free chipping service!

Preparing for the crew’s arrival:

  • Brush that has been cleared or stacked with heavy equipment will not be chipped.
  • Material including, but not limited to, palm, succulents, and poision oak will not be chipped.
  • Old, matted stickers and/or lumber are not eligible for chipping.
  • Brush must be free of mud, rocks, and other debris.
  • Maximum six-inch diameter on cut limbs.
  • Piles must be stacked no more than six feet high, cut ends facing the chipper access area, and be staged within 5 feet from your driveway, roadway, or curb.

Please Note:

  • The Community Chipping Program for fuel reduction is offered in targeted communities and are subject to availability of funding. Communities may be added or removed without notice.
  • This program is funding dependent, and we are currently not accepting new applicants.
  • The Community Chipping Program is administered by the Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego County in partnership with the Fire Safe Council of San Diego County. Funding is provided by San Diego Gas and Electric.
  • In accordance with Federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability.

Post-Storm Sandbag Guidance

With rainy season approaching, residents may want to consider keeping their sandbags (filled or empty) for reuse.  Generally, clean and dry sandbags can be stored out of the sunlight in a covered, above-ground location.

If used sandbags are uncontaminated, you can empty the sand and then save, repurpose or dispose of the empty bags.

If you see or suspect that your sandbags are contaminated (e.g., in contact with raw sewage, industrial chemicals, petroleum products, etc.), handle them with protective gear, including gloves and protective eyewear.  Dispose of them at select landfills or through a hazardous waste contractor (as appropriate).  As additional handling and paperwork will be required, please contact the landfill facility or operator in advance for more information

Do not place bags in recycle bin.   Empty bags can be placed in trash cans if you choose not to reuse them.  You may also take them directly to a landfill.  Local landfills (Miramar, Sycamore, Otay, and Borrego Springs) can accept sandbags used for stormwater control during the recent storm.

Full sandbags should not be placed in carts or dumpsters for pick-up (due to their weight).  The sand can be raked into soil or added to planters or flowerbeds as a soil amendment instead.

For questions not covered here, unincorporated county residents can contact 1-877-R-1-EARTH or 1-877-713-2784.

Residents of cities or tribal lands should also check with their jurisdictions for any additional guidance.

Valley Center Library

Did you know you can safely recycle your batteries for free by taking them to 14 San Diego County Library branches?

That’s right, the library. It’s not just for books; it’s for batteries too!

Just bring them to the battery drop-off bins located inside the 14 branches. The libraries primarily collect standard alkaline batteries — Cs, Ds, AAs, AAAs, 9-volts, you name it. But they can also take rechargeable batteries; lithium batteries must be bagged separately.

Please tape positive end of batteries to reduce flammability and place batteries in a resealable bag.

Donated Materials Policy

The San Diego County Library is no longer accepting physical donations of materials for the collection, with the exception of items produced by local authors or musicians.

The Library purchases materials at steep discounts that come with labels, barcodes and covers, ready for customer use. It is more expensive to accept a donation and prepare it for circulation than it is for the Library to purchase a title that comes prepared by our vendors. If you would like to support the Library’s collection, we encourage you to donate funds for the purchase of physical and digital materials for our communities.

If you are looking for an organization to donate your books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, or magazines to, consider contacting one of the organizations below:

Your Branch Friends of the Library
Many branch Friends of the Library groups accept book donations for their book sales. Please check their websites or phone ahead to ensure that your donation can be accepted at this time. Items donated to the Friends of the Library are sold to support San Diego County Library branch collections and events.

Medications

Medications in standard containers may be deposited in collection boxes. Loose medication can be put into plastic bags available at the collection box and then deposited. Please ensure any liquid medication is enclosed in secure containers before depositing.

Once collected, evidence staff will ensure the medication is disposed of according to federal standards. Most prescription drug drop-off locations are open weekdays from 8am to 5pm. Call the station’s non-emergency number for hours.

Needles/Sharps

Make sure sharps are stored in a sharps container kit or in a rigid, puncture-resistant, tightly-sealed container, including: bleach bottles, liquid detergent bottles, or coffee cans with lids. Containers should be no larger than 2 liters or 1/2 gallon.

Do not put in: paper or plastic bags, glass containers, cardboard or coated paper containers, plastic bottles that have a CRV (California Redemption Value), or milk jugs.

Most drop-off bins for sharps are located outside of the station, call the station’s non-emergency number to confirm.
