We offer free commercial and residential e-waste pickup service throughout San Diego County.
Our service is free when, included in your recycling, are 2 or more computers, flat screen TVs, network switches, or pro audio components. Please read our Pickup Policy for details.

Due to physical limitations and legal guidelines, we are unable to accept the following through our automated system. Please call us if you need to recycle any of the following:

  • Medical devices
  • Any single item over 80 lbs. (Items weighing more than 80 lbs. are acceptable but might add an additional fee)

The $50 service fee to pick up all of your unwanted electronics is waived if you are also recycling at least two qualifying items. Please list items to be recycled in notes.

This site accepts latex and oil-based house paint, stains and varnish in containers up to 5 gallons in size. This site does not accept aerosols (spray paint or other spray products), containers without original labels, or containers that are leaking or empty.

To be accepted for drop-off, PaintCare products must be in their original containers of no larger than 5 gallons in size, must have the original manufacturer’s printed label on the container, and must be covered with a secured lid. They cannot accept open or leaking cans.

For Businesses:

To use the PaintCare program for oil-based paint, a business must qualify as an exempt generator under federal and any analogous state hazardous waste generator rules. Please visit our Very Small Quantity Generator page for more information on exempt generator rules. If your business does not qualify as an exempt generator, it will not be able to use the program for oil-based paint, but it can still use the program for latex products.

Alpine Library

Just bring them to the battery drop-off bins located inside the branches. The libraries primarily collect standard alkaline batteries — Cs, Ds, AAs, AAAs, 9-volts, you name it. But they can also take rechargeable batteries; lithium batteries must be bagged separately.

Please tape positive end of batteries to reduce flammability and place batteries in a resealable bag.

Donated Materials Policy

The San Diego County Library is no longer accepting physical donations of materials for the collection, with the exception of items produced by local authors or musicians.

The Library purchases materials at steep discounts that come with labels, barcodes and covers, ready for customer use. It is more expensive to accept a donation and prepare it for circulation than it is for the Library to purchase a title that comes prepared by our vendors. If you would like to support the Library’s collection, we encourage you to donate funds for the purchase of physical and digital materials for our communities.

Do the items have to be from Zara?
No they do not. You can donate any kind of clothing or fabrics you wish to recycle.
Can I donate other products such as footwear or accessories?
Yes. You may include any kind of clothing, household linens, footwear, accessories, and even jewelry.
Can I donate clothes that are not in perfect condition?
Yes. The collected clothing is sorted prior to being reused or recycled. Items of clothing that are 100% cotton, wool, or polyester can be recycled into new fabric. The remaining garments will be converted into construction or automotive materials. Items that cannot be reused or recycled because of health or safety reasons or due to the quality of their materials are subjected to a rigorous waste management process.

Why Refill?

Most plastics are petroleum (aka crude oil) based. Yup. Everyday we produce single-use petroleum waste at an alarming rate, and very little of it gets recycled. Plastics that are not recycled can break up into tiny pieces called micro plastics. Micro plastics and micro-beads are tiny particles of plastic that can pass through water filtration systems. Plastics also release harmful chemicals that can cause health problems in humans and animals. These chemicals can also seep into the ground, groundwater, and eventually into local waterways.

Since 2010, we have offered front-of-store recycling kiosks that give guests an easy way to recycle cans, glass, plastic bottles, plastic bags, MP3 players, ink cartridges and cell phones right in their local store. The goal of the program is to extend our company recycling efforts, and so far, the program has kept thousands of tons of recycled materials out of landfills.

We endeavor to make recycling simpler and more convenient for our guests with select take-back programs. We have offered front-of-store recycling of plastic bags and some electronics since 2010 and have held car seat trade-in events since 2016.

They offer plastic film and bag take back and recycling services for their customers at many of their stores, where collection bins are conveniently placed within stores entrances.

Micro-Farm Installation and Upkeep

HOW IT WORKS:

Co-Harvest is an agricultural nonprofit that establishes and maintains micro-farms at low costs throughout San Diego. We transform your unused space into an efficient micro-farm, which feeds your family and your community. Freshly harvested crops are distributed back to members, food banks, and community fridges. Sliding scale memberships and farm installations are available for low-income families, philanthropists and pre-existing farms & community spaces.

Get started by scheduling a free consultation. We’ll determine the best plan for you based on the amount of space you have (minimum 10×10 ft), sunlight, irrigation, and your income eligibility. Then you’ll pick your veggies, pick your membership plan, and we’ll start co-harvesting!

OTHER SERVICES:

Fresh Food Delivery: Their delivery program is solely for food-insecure members, and we are looking for food insecure households that would be willing to grow food on their land. All Food Insecure Members will receive at least a small bi-weekly bag of produce at NO CHARGE.

Food Donations: The Community Supporter Membership is made for people who love the idea of donating food for those in need without lifting a finger.

Food Scrap Pickup & Compost: This service provides free food-scrap pickup, as well as compost education for Co-Harvest members. Their Food Members are required to take part in our free food scrap collection or at-home composting program.

 

Father Joe’s Villages Thrift Store – Hillcrest

Donations accepted Tuesday-Sunday 10AM until donation capacity is reached.

We accept most donations of items in gently used and working condition. All donations are sold as is, so they must be clean and in good condition. When we receive an item that cannot be sold in our stores or easily recycled, we have to pay for disposal. This means that less funds go towards helping our neighbors in need. Please read both the list of items we accept and the list of items we are not able to accept on the website.

Simply bring your unwanted, unused or expired medication to a Walgreens safe medication disposal kiosk and drop it in—just like putting a letter in a mailbox.

Vista Paint – El Cajon (PaintCare Program)

This location will accept latex or oil-based architectural paint or “program products” which are defined as interior or exterior architectural coatings such as stains and varnishes, sold in containers of 5 gallons or less.

Original equipment
Specialty coatings

This location will accepts latex and oil-based house paint, stains and varnish under the following conditions:

Paint must be in its original container
Container must be labeled
Container must be in good condition and not leaking
Container must be five gallons in size or smaller.

Drop-off sites may establish limits on the quantity of products they accept. Generally, the limit in small stores will be lower than in large store. Please check with the site if you have more than 5 gallons.

In addition to residents, this program is available to trade painters, contractors and other businesses with one restriction: If your business produces more than 27 gallons of hazardous waste per month, you may only use the drop-off sites for your latex paint and not for your oil-based paint. Plastic Beach Retail Recycling

Retail recycling with Plastic Beach is an easy, hassle-free approach to getting plastic film materials recycled and supporting corporate sustainability programs. Plastic Beach also offers consumer recycling opportunities plus a monthly subscription for $14. Contact them for more information.

They are a non-profit that facilitates plastic film materials recycling at the pre-consumer stage at small and large companies. Based in Southern California, Plastic Beach is a 501(c)3 non-profit that is saving the environment one plastic sheet at a time.

Kroger® Our Brands Recycling Program – Mail In

TerraCycle® and Kroger® have partnered to create a national recycling program for Kroger® Our Brands flexible plastic packaging.

The Simple Truth™ Recycling Program has now been expanded to include all of Kroger’s store brands of flexible plastic packing! You can now recycle flexible plastic packaging from Simple Truth™, Private Selection®, Kroger® Brand, Comforts®, HemisFares®, Luvsome®, Abound® and more!

HOW IT WORKS

Participating is simple and free.

  1. Sign up for the program. If you don’t have a TerraCycle account yet, create one here!
  2. Once in the program, start collecting flexible plastic packaging in any box you have.
  3. When your collection box is full, log into your account to download and print a shipping label.
  4. Seal up your collection box, affix the printed shipping label onto it. Send via UPS.
