Their Clothes the Loop program encourages people to drop off unwanted clothing and footwear at The North Face Retail and Outlet Stores. Recycle your used apparel and footwear (any condition, any brand) at our stores and earn a $10 reward toward your next purchase of $100 or more at The North Face.
The items dropped in our collection bins are sent to our non-profit partner, Soles4Souls. Their mission is to create sustainable jobs and provide relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing. The items put into our bins are used for disaster relief or micro-enterprise programs that aim to provide small entrepreneurs with business opportunities.
Since they started Clothes the Loop, people have brought in more than 95,000 pounds of clothing and footwear to The North Face US stores for reuse and recycling. Click Here to find a The North Face retail store near you in North America and click Here to find an Outlet store.

Established in the early 1990s, Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program collects old, worn-out athletic shoes for recycling, and along with pre-consumer shoe waste, transforms them into Nike Grind, a material used to create athletic and playground surfaces and more.
Most Nike retail stores accept shoes for recycling — we recommend contacting the store before visiting.
You can drop off athletic shoes of any brand for recycling. Nike’s recycling equipment is designed specifically for the material and dimensions of athletic shoes. For that reason, Nike cannot accept sandals, flip-flops, dress shoes, or boots. Nike also does not accept shoes containing metal, such as cleats or spikes.
To know if your shoes should be donated or recycled, use these simple guidelines:
Recycle your shoes if…
They’re full of holes or are just too trashed to wear.
The soles are worn out or the tread is gone.
If the cushioning looks crinkled, rippled or lacks support.
Donate your shoes if…
Your shoes still have life in them.
They’re still in good shape, but you no longer like them.

Post-Storm Sandbag Guidance
With rainy season approaching, residents may want to consider keeping their sandbags (filled or empty) for reuse. Generally, clean and dry sandbags can be stored out of the sunlight in a covered, above-ground location.
If used sandbags are uncontaminated, you can empty the sand and then save, repurpose or dispose of the empty bags.
If you see or suspect that your sandbags are contaminated (e.g., in contact with raw sewage, industrial chemicals, petroleum products, etc.), handle them with protective gear, including gloves and protective eyewear. Dispose of them at select landfills or through a hazardous waste contractor (as appropriate). As additional handling and paperwork will be required, please contact the landfill facility or operator in advance for more information
Do not place bags in recycle bin. Empty bags can be placed in trash cans if you choose not to reuse them. You may also take them directly to a landfill. Local landfills (Miramar, Sycamore, Otay, and Borrego Springs) can accept sandbags used for stormwater control during the recent storm.
Full sandbags should not be placed in carts or dumpsters for pick-up (due to their weight). The sand can be raked into soil or added to planters or flowerbeds as a soil amendment instead.
For questions not covered here, unincorporated county residents can contact 1-877-R-1-EARTH or 1-877-713-2784.

Columbia’s Rethreads program encourages consumers to bring in their used clothing and shoes of any brand in clean, dry condition, to our participating retail stores to be given a new life. Find a Columbia store near you, here.
Garments and footwear that are dropped in ReThreads bins in each Columbia store, will be sent to a textiles processing facility through I:CO, a textile recycling solutions provider. The products are then sorted, reprocessed, and reused or recycled. Items that are still wearable find new homes through the second-hand market. Unwearable items are reused for products like cleaning cloths or recycled into fibers for new products such as insulation, carpet padding, stuffing for toys and even new fabrics.
