Target – Ocean Beach
Recycling
Since 2010, we have offered front-of-store recycling kiosks that give guests an easy way to recycle cans, glass, plastic bottles, plastic bags, MP3 players, ink cartridges and cell phones right in their local store. The goal of the program is to extend our company recycling efforts, and so far, the program has kept thousands of tons of recycled materials out of landfills.
Car Seat Trade-In Program
Target’s Car Seat Trade-in Event provides you an opportunity to get rid of your unwanted car seats in exchange for a 20% off coupon good towards a new car seat, car seat base, travel system or stroller, or select baby home gear. It’s one way we’re working together to achieve our Target Forward goal of zero waste to landfill in U.S. operations by 2030.
Materials from the old car seats are recycled by Target’s partner, Waste Management, to create new products such as pallets and plastic buckets, and construction materials such as steel beams and carpet padding.
Keep an eye on this page for information about our next trade-in event in 2024.
Select Target stores will now recycle your old clothes
What can be dropped off? Any kind of clothing, in any condition, from any brand. But there are two rules: the clothes must be clean and they must be dry.
Can any apparel item be donated for recycling? No. It does not recycle old bags, purses, shoes and other footwear, swimwear and rain or snow gear.
The San Diego County Target stores that now offer clothing recycling include:
- 3029 University Ave. in San Diego
- 4864 Newport Ave. in San Diego
- 3030 Grape St. in San Diego
- 280 E. Via Rancho Pkwy in Escondido

Goodwill Soft Plastics Program
Goodwill San Diego aims to address the environmental challenge posed by soft plastics, such as plastic films, shopping bags, and bubble wrap which are not accepted in curbside recycling programs. These materials often end up in landfills where they contribute to pollution, contaminate our waterways, and pose a risk to local wildlife. By establishing a collection program, Goodwill wants to divert these plastics, reduce environmental impact, and promote a more sustainable community.
Once collected at our facilities, soft plastics are sent to our partner who transforms them into a variety of valuable products. These include durable pallets, stylish patio furniture, and deck flooring. This process keeps soft plastics in the use cycle, reducing the need for new material by using products that would have become waste.
To participate in the collection program, donors can bring clean and dry soft plastics to any of our participating retail locations. The soft plastics we accept include the following: plastic film, single use grocery/retail bags, cling wrap, bubble wrap, air pillows used for shipping, newspaper sleeves, case overwrap (like for water or soda), and other product wrap. If the package is shiny or makes a crinkly/crunchy sound in your hand, it should not be included. If you’re unsure if your plastic can be donated, see if the package will stretch when you pull it. If yes, it can be included. If it tears like paper, please leave it behind.
Following these steps ensures that your donated soft plastics can be effectively recycled into new products and supports a cleaner, healthier environment.

GotSneakers – Free Athletic Shoe Recycling
Our sneaker recycling program is and will remain 100% FREE. We do not collect any credit card or banking information from our sneaker recycling partners.
There is a service fee of $3.00 to process each sneaker recycling bag to balance the surging costs of shipping, materials, warehousing, and labor. This small fee will be deducted from your monthly payout. However, you will not be charged anything if your payout is less than $3.00.
We do not accept non-athletic footwear of any kind including but not limited to dress shoes, heels, sandals, wedges, water socks, rain boots, crocs, and other non-athletic styles. If you have non-athletic footwear that you would like to recycle, we recommend finding a local charity, homeless shelter, or other organization that will accept non-athletic footwear.
Sharia’s Closet

Epic Brand Water Filter Recycling
We use Terra Cycle’s Zero Waste Box for Filters. When we get filters back from you, we place them in our Zero Waste Box. Once it’s full, we send it back to Terra Cycle and they send us another box. So the party never has to end.
Terra Cycle makes sure all the components of our filters are disposed of responsibly. The plastic casing that protects the filtration media is broken down and made into plastic to be reused. The filtration media needs special attention since it contains contaminants, so Terra Cycle makes sure those contaminants don’t just end up back in our soil and into our water supply.
