What is a zero waste grocery store?
A zero-waste grocery store is just a regular grocery store, with one small difference: No single use plastic products are sold! And since every product is sold in bulk, customers can purchase any quantity they’d like.
How does it work?
It’s simple. Bring your reusable containers, weigh them, fill them, then weigh them again. This way, the weight of your container is deducted and you only pay for what you need.
What if I don’t have my own containers?
No problem! There are reusable containers available for purchase in the store. We also have a community shelf where people have donated jars for anyone to use.
How does this contribute to sustainability?
By making the switch to reusable glass containers, together we are reducing the amount of single use plastics sent to our landfills and polluting our oceans.

Certified Recyclable Material Collectors (CRMCs) are mid-scale recyclers that have been certified by the City of San Diego to ensure collection vehicles and containers are properly maintained, and acceptable recyclable materials are collected and reported to the City. According to the City’s Recycling Ordinance, all businesses and privately-serviced residences are required to have recycling, organic waste recycling and trash collection from one Franchise Hauler. In addition to the required services from a Franchise Hauler, a business or privately-serviced residence may supplement recycling and/or organic waste recycling service from one of the following optional CRMCs. The City does not assign haulers or set service rates for businesses and privately-serviced residences.
KD Farms Trucking
We pick up local discarded food and processing residuals and deliver them to our sister company, Frank Konyn Dairy to be used as cattle feed. Last year we picked up over 18,000 tons of the following:
- Spent brewery grains from 18 local breweries
- Vegetable and fruit pulp from three local juice manufacturers
- Discarded bakery products from 12 local bakeries, bread factories, and tortilla shops
We also deliver a variety of high quality mulches, composts, barks and specialty soils to landscapers in San Diego County and throughout Southern California for our other sister company, San Pasqual Valley Soils.

businesses and privately-serviced residences are required to have recycling, organic waste recycling and trash collection from one Franchise Hauler. In addition to
the required services from a Franchise Hauler, a business or privately-serviced residence may supplement recycling and/or organic waste recycling service from
one of the following optional CRMCs. The City does not assign haulers or set service rates for businesses and privately-serviced residences.

City of San Diego Organic Waste Recycling Program
California State Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383), requires the reduction of organic waste disposed of in landfills. Organic waste is food scraps and food-soiled paper from kitchens and food operations and yard waste such as garden and landscape waste, organic textiles and carpets and wood waste.
In order to comply with SB 1383, and to make San Diego a more sustainable and thriving place for everyone, the City of San Diego is pleased to introduce a new Organic Waste Recycling program for all City residents. The program – which represents the biggest change to trash and recycling in San Diego’s history – supports the City’s Zero Waste and Climate Action Plan goals.
Organic waste collection services for households serviced by the City of San Diego’s Environmental Services Department will begin in January 2023 and will continue as a phased rollout, with completion expected by mid-2023.
For information about when you can start participating in organic waste recycling, what items can go in the new green bin, and other vital details, please refer to the Organic Waste Recycling Frequently Asked Questions page or the city’s new Organic Waste Recycling website.

There are many ways to become a better recycler. Understanding what is recyclable and what isn’t in your community is the number one way to be a better, more effective recycler. But no matter where you live, some items should NEVER be recycled – for example, yard waste.
While there are a few sustainable ways to manage your yard waste, which include grass clippings and trimmings from trees, flowers, shrubs, and more, recycling that material isn’t one of them.
If you’re looking to implement more sustainable habits into your yard or lawn maintenance routine, then check out these tips from Republic Services:
- Don’t trash it. If you can avoid putting your lawn clippings or yard waste in the trash, you’re taking a small step to help support a greener environment. And no matter what, never place yard waste of any kind in your recycling bin.
- Let it be. Leaving clippings on your lawn will NOT damage the grass. If you mow your lawn so that the grass clippings are never more than two or three inches tall and leave the clippings where they fall – they will help enrich the soil. Don’t forget about those leaves. Did you know that you can also leave leaves on your lawn? According to Consumer Reports, leaves create a natural layer on any soil or grass and help foster and support a local ecosystem.
- Compost it. If you compost at home, yard trimmings can be added to an outdoor compost pile. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, if all yard clippings were composted, we could keep about 33 million pounds of organic waste out of landfills each year. Composting is not the same process as recycling cans, paper and plastic, so never put organic waste in your curbside recycling bin. If you want to learn more about composting, check out our tips for starting an at-home compost bin.
- Get help. If you think that finding a way to sustainably manage your yard waste is overwhelming, then get help! Find a local yard waste or composting removal service to help you do good with your yard waste and lawn clippings. It’s a simple solution to remove yard debris while protecting the planet.
Taking pride in your yard or garden doesn’t mean taking up space in a landfill with yard waste. Dispose of your yard waste the correct way and then sit back and admire the beautiful – and sustainable – outdoor space you’ve created!

There’s no need to wash or crush your recyclables. Just separate your aluminum, glass, and plastic containers in different bags or bins, and head for the recycling center.
Recycling centers are not owned or operated by the State of California. All recycling center days and hours of operation are determined and overseen by the individual recycling center operator and must be posted at the center. Centers are required to be open a minimum of 30 hours per week, at least five days a week, and at least one weekend day. If you would like to report a recycling center closure or file a formal complaint regarding a certified recycling center, please email CalRecycle or call 1-800-RECYCLE.

You can save some time by sorting, draining, and densifying bottles and cans before bringing them to One Earth, or utilize our One Earth Sorting StationTM to sort and drain material at our place.

One Day HHW Collection Events | City of San Diego
The City offers household hazardous waste collection events every spring and fall as a convenient way to dispose of hazardous materials and prevent them from ending up in the Miramar Landfill.
Please check the city’s website for information on dates and locations.
Items accepted at these events include oil, antifreeze, oil filters, car batteries, household batteries and fluorescent bulbs. If you have other Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) to dispose of, please check the City’s HHW webpage for information on proper disposal options.
Recycling events are funded by the Environmental Services and Public Utilities Departments and a grant from the State of California Department of Resources, Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle).

Hydros Free Recycling Envelope Program
How it works
Hydros has partnered with TerraCycle so you can recycle Hyrdros water filter products and packaging for free. Request a free shipping envelope with a prepaid shipping label, send in your trash, and we’ll recycle it. Enrollment limits apply.
- Request a free envelope using the order form below. (It will ship via USPS within two weeks.)
- Once you receive your envelope, remove the prepaid return label from inside the envelope and put it on the outside, covering your address.
- Begin to fill the envelope with Hyrdros water filter products and packaging.
- Once you’ve filled up your envelope, seal it, and drop it off at a USPS location.
UCSD Waste Tags Program | Pharmaceutical Disposal | Employees Only
By law, hazardous waste containers must be properly labeled for storage, transportation, and disposal. A UC San Diego hazardous waste tag stating ownership, accumulation start date, contents, and hazards of the waste must be securely attached to your waste container before waste is added.
The Online Waste Tag Program (OTP) is UC San Diego’s Online Waste Tracking Program. When you enter information about a waste chemical into the OTP, it generates a completed waste tag ready for you to print and attach to your container. Use the OTP’s collection request feature when you’re ready for a waste pickup.

San Diego Medical Waste Disposal is a locally owned and operated company that is committed to giving you excellent customer service, high-quality materials, flexible pickup schedules, compliance training, and incredibly fast response for your medical waste disposal, biohazard disposal and sharps container disposal service needs. In addition, we also provide low prices and a transparent flat rate.
Please note that all services will be performed during the normal business hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on your scheduled service day. Additionally, San Diego Medical Waste Services does not charge a premium for “off-cycle” service requests, however “Off-Cycle” services do not constitute a reorganization of your current service schedule and will be charged as a “normal service”. Once this “Off-Cycle” service request has been completed, we will continue to service your facility as defined by your predetermined service schedule.
Coronado Brewing Company | Paktech Brewcycling
Paktech uses 100% recycled plastic to make can holders. They are made of High Density Polyethylene (#2 HDPE), one of the more commonly accepted plastics in curbside recycling programs. Although Paktechs are made of a recyclable material, they are rarely picked up or read correctly by the sorting systems at Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs).
As a solution, the PakTech recycling program is working with the San Diego Brewcycling Collaborative to set up drop off Paktech stations at local breweries in San Diego County. Find your closest drop off center and properly dispose of your can handles in order for them to be recycled and repurposed, have a third life as park benches, and even produce new PakTech handles for future use.
