Target – Santee

Recycling

Since 2010, we have offered front-of-store recycling kiosks that give guests an easy way to recycle cans, glass, plastic bottles, plastic bags, MP3 players, ink cartridges and cell phones right in their local store. The goal of the program is to extend our company recycling efforts, and so far, the program has kept thousands of tons of recycled materials out of landfills.

We endeavor to make recycling simpler and more convenient for our guests with select take-back programs. We have offered front-of-store recycling of plastic bags and some electronics since 2010 and have held car seat trade-in events since 2016.

Battery Collection & Recycling Services

Charge up battery recycling with best-in-class recycling solutions that are convenient, compliant and safe. Call2Recycle offers turnkey and flexible options to recycle your rechargeable or single-use batteries by shipping in boxes from your home or office.  For customers with larger volumes, we can also coordinate freight shipments of batteries for recycling.  Contact us at 1-877-723-1297 to learn more about these services or to discuss your recycling needs in more detail.

4S Ranch Library

Did you know you can safely recycle your batteries for free by taking them to 14 San Diego County Library branches?

That’s right, the library. It’s not just for books; it’s for batteries too!

Just bring them to the battery drop-off bins located inside the 14 branches. The libraries primarily collect standard alkaline batteries — Cs, Ds, AAs, AAAs, 9-volts, you name it. But they can also take rechargeable batteries; lithium batteries must be bagged separately.

Please tape positive end of batteries to reduce flammability and place batteries in a resealable bag.

Donated Materials Policy

The San Diego County Library is no longer accepting physical donations of materials for the collection, with the exception of items produced by local authors or musicians.

The Library purchases materials at steep discounts that come with labels, barcodes and covers, ready for customer use. It is more expensive to accept a donation and prepare it for circulation than it is for the Library to purchase a title that comes prepared by our vendors. If you would like to support the Library’s collection, we encourage you to donate funds for the purchase of physical and digital materials for our communities.

If you are looking for an organization to donate your books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, or magazines to, consider contacting one of the organizations below:

Your Branch Friends of the Library
Many branch Friends of the Library groups accept book donations for their book sales. Please check their websites or phone ahead to ensure that your donation can be accepted at this time. Sunshine Market and Refillery

Zero Waste Products for Sustainable Living

Sunshine Market & Refillery is your friendly neighborhood (zero-waste) grocery store founded with one goal in mind: to reduce waste. To that end, we’ve made it our mission to provide the community with a sustainable source for grocery products and everyday essentials.

FAQs

What do you sell?

From household cleaners, to skin care, to non-perishables and more, we sell anything a typical grocery store sells. Don’t see something you want? Feel free to submit a suggestion!

What is a zero waste grocery store?

A zero-waste grocery store is just a regular grocery store, with one small difference: No single use plastic products are sold! And since every product is sold in bulk, customers can purchase any quantity they’d like.

How does it work?

It’s simple. Bring your reusable containers, weigh them, fill them, then weigh them again. This way, the weight of your container is deducted and you only pay for what you need.

What if I don’t have my own containers?

No problem! There are reusable containers available for purchase in the store. We also have a community shelf where people have donated jars for anyone to use.

How does this contribute to sustainability?

By making the switch to reusable glass containers, together we are reducing the amount of single use plastics sent to our landfills and polluting our oceans.

California Drug Take-Back Program

The California Drug Take-Back Program has enough remaining funding to provide you with free liners (including shipping and disposal of filled liners) through early 2022. We encourage you to continue accepting unwanted medications in the med bins we’ve installed at your facility, shipping them back once they are no more than 2/3 full, and ordering replacement liners as you’ve previously done (using the process documentation provided to you upon installation of the med bin). SB 212 is expected to be fully operational, barring no delays, in 2022.

Green Bin – Republic Services Customers

Keep It Green: Why You Should Never Recycle Yard Waste

Becoming a better recycler means understanding what is recyclable and what isn’t in your community. No matter where you live, some items, like yard waste, should never be recycled. Learn how to sustainably manage your yard waste.

Byline: BTB Editor

September 1, 2021 / Time to read: 5 min

There are many ways to become a better recycler. Understanding what is recyclable and what isn’t in your community is the number one way to be a better, more effective recycler. But no matter where you live, some items should NEVER be recycled – for example, yard waste.

While there are a few sustainable ways to manage your yard waste, which include grass clippings and trimmings from trees, flowers, shrubs, and more, recycling that material isn’t one of them.

If you’re looking to implement more sustainable habits into your yard or lawn maintenance routine, then check out these tips from Republic Services:

  • Don’t trash it. If you can avoid putting your lawn clippings or yard waste in the trash, you’re taking a small step to help support a greener environment. And no matter what, never place yard waste of any kind in your recycling bin.
  • Let it be. Leaving clippings on your lawn will NOT damage the grass. If you mow your lawn so that the grass clippings are never more than two or three inches tall and leave the clippings where they fall – they will help enrich the soil. Don’t forget about those leaves. Did you know that you can also leave leaves on your lawn? According to Consumer Reports, leaves create a natural layer on any soil or grass and help foster and support a local ecosystem.
  • Compost it. If you compost at home, yard trimmings can be added to an outdoor compost pile. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, if all yard clippings were composted, we could keep about 33 million pounds of organic waste out of landfills each year. Composting is not the same process as recycling cans, paper and plastic, so never put organic waste in your curbside recycling bin. If you want to learn more about composting, check out our tips for starting an at-home compost bin.
  • Get help. If you think that finding a way to sustainably manage your yard waste is overwhelming, then get help! Find a local yard waste or composting removal service to help you do good with your yard waste and lawn clippings. It’s a simple solution to remove yard debris while protecting the planet.

Taking pride in your yard or garden doesn’t mean taking up space in a landfill with yard waste. Dispose of your yard waste the correct way and then sit back and admire the beautiful – and sustainable – outdoor space you’ve created!

San Diego Fix-It Clinic

Register for an upcoming, free Fix-It Clinic here.

Peter Mui, from the Bay Area started this idea of Fixit Clinics because the biggest items that are disposed of right now are electronic devices and textiles that needed a simple repair/mend but it is so much easier to toss and buy than to try to fix. By creating what he likes to describe as do-it-together disassembly at local libraries and/or Makerspaces he brought together the community of trades people to share their skills with their fellow neighbors on how to troubleshoot and repair their appliances, clothes, electronics (the list can be endless) at these hands on clinics. This program has been adopted throughout the country and has received overwhelming support in every community.
